A Tribute to My Brother-in-Law, Grand Joe Mahop:

I have known Grand Joe since 2007, when I first met his cousin Felicité (Bebe). Even though he asked a few questions at first, he graciously accepted me into his life with warmth and generosity. From that moment on, Grand Joe stood with us in every season, near and far. At times he traveled over 400 miles to visit our children. He was especially present at my ordination, celebrating with joy and pride.

Grand Joe was a man of integrity and devotion. He trusted me, often turning to me for counsel, and in return he offered the best advice he could with sincerity and care. Whenever we reached out with questions or concerns, he was ready, not reluctantly, but wholeheartedly, to respond with wisdom that came from a place of love and genuine concern for our family’s well-being.

When he received the news of the illness that would ultimately take his life, Grand Joe did not keep it to himself. He reached out to let us know, demonstrating his thoughtfulness even in the face of his own suffering. This was the essence of who he was, a man of peace, love, and forgiveness.

Grand Joe carried a generous heart. He sought reconciliation and unity within his family. He stood for harmony. He was a voice of reason, a steady presence during times of joy and times of hardship. He loved deeply, laughed wholeheartedly, and extended grace freely.

His passing has left a profound void in our lives. A void not just of presence, but of grace, charity, love, humor, and the quiet wisdom of how to navigate life with strength and peace. From my perspective, the world now feels less bright without the warmth of his presence.

Yet, even in our sorrow, we give thanks for his life, his spirit, and all the moments he lovingly shared with us. May his memory continue to inspire peace in our hearts and unity among those who loved him.

Rest in peace, Grand Joe. You will be dearly missed, always remembered, and forever cherished.
